The following is a short account from the skipper of the Challenger Yacht we sailed to the Channel Islands and back in June.
Ship’s Captain’s Log of the good ship Challenger 4 on a 5 day trip from Portsmouth to the Channel Islands in June.
3 June 2025
Deck all prepped. Just some pasties and beans between us and an adventure into the gale. 8 POB – 4 tall ships and 4 FCS (who all look very fit and capable!!).
Current plan is to play in Solent for the afternoon, before heading through the Needles with the evening tide. Target St Peter Port, Guernsey. ETA mid morning Wednesday.
4 June
CH4 happily alongside the floating pontoon in Guernsey. Everyone tired but happy after an interesting crossing. Wind between 4 and 34 knots, flat calm to the Race in full flood, a great chilli con carne and a little, but not too much seasickness.
Now off to explore the fleshpots of St Peter Port. We will be here overnight tonight before some exploring tomorrow.
5 June
After a few of our number ventured off for a swim at the local sea water lido (led by Hugo, who else!!) we are sitting down to brunch.
Passage planning then a drizzly walk around the town is planned before a lunchtime departure for Alderney.
6 June
Still raining down here in the wild south, but everyone still in excellent spirits. Its a bit grim for too much exploring, so we plan to head off in 30 minutes or so for our downwind dash back to Gunwharf. ETA this evening.

CH4 safely alongside GWQ. A lovely breezy crossing from Alderney followed by a delicious thai red curry.
7 June
CH4 finishing our adventure with a short motor tour this morning to watch the start of the Round the Island, and cheer on our fellow Challengers.
