The RYA Day Skipper qualification gives you the skills you need to skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. It’s a practical course set over five days, and when taken with First Class Sailing takes place in the Solent.
One of the most common questions asked by aspiring Day Skippers or those that have completed the course with us, is how far offshore they can go once qualified. There’s no real fixed answer to this, and certainly no law. But someone qualified with Day Skipper should be fine to sail up to 20 nautical miles from a nominated departure point, in good weather and in day light hours. If heading straight offshore and out to sea then around 12 to 20 nautical miles would be a reasonable distance for a Day Skipper.
Whilst our Day Skipper practical and theory courses do give you great experience, it’s only designed to give you that experience in familiar waters. Once you sail further offshore, you are more at risk from a lack of knowledge, adverse weather conditions and perhaps the limitations of your vessel.
Understanding the Day Skipper qualification
Certification requirements
To get your Day Skipper certification, you need to complete the practical and theory courses. The theoretical knowledge includes navigation, pilotage, meteorology, and collision regulations, and more.
Practical skills include boat handling, sail handling, and safety procedures.
But this won’t necessarily set you up to sail long passages and ventures miles away from shore. The Coastal Skipper is the next stage and that focuses more on giving you the skills to sail further a field.
Scope of competency
Day Skippers are qualified to skipper a yacht up to 24 meters in length and operate in daylight hours in coastal waters typically up to 20 miles offshore.
Yes, you will become responsible for the safety of the yacht and crew, navigation, and passage planning, and will be trained on how to handle emergency situations and make informed decisions.
But, again, you are only being trained in familiar coastal waters.
In summary, the RYA Day Skipper qualification is a valuable certificate that demonstrates competence in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. But if you wish to sail offshore further than 20 nautical miles and on longer passages, we recommend that you progress to Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Theory.
